Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight. A person can be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as from having too much fat. Obesity is caused by eating more food than your body can use, not getting enough exercise, and as well as a poor choice of diet. This epidemic begun in the mid 1900’s lifestyle changed from walks to bus rides and cars, gym classes and after school programs being cut, and afternoons being spent with a television, video games, and especially the internet. What can be done to combat obesity in the United States?
Parents are not even busier than ever and families and having less home cooked meals. Portion sizes have changed from 2 to 5 times bigger. Beverage portions have grown since the mid 1970’s, and the average of sweetened beverage was 13.6 ounces modernly today it is now 20 ounces at a time. We are now eating at least 31 more calories, including 56% of more fats and oils and 14% of more sugars and sweeteners (Ingram, Scott. Want Fries with That? In the Michelle Obama campaign, called “Let’s Move” her goal is to raise America to a healthier generation of kids. Childhood obesity rate has, tripled, and today nearly one in three children in America are overweight (Obama, Michelle L. "Let's Move." In the Let’s Move campaign, we all together have to solve the challenge of obesity within our generation, professionals being doctors, teachers, and most importantly parents. We all together can work to not only give parents helpful information about healthy food choices, provide affordable food and as well making kids more physically active. With more physical exercising there will then decrease diseases that are caused by obesity.
In today’s world everyone is searching for a quick result of a specific image, rather the image being a dream or goal. Americans should decrease the rate of the epidemic and spend less money on waste less gastric bypasses and other weight loss surgeries, maintain a constant healthy choice of food and maintain stress-less.
