At the time of the First World War Canada's involvement was expected by Britain as Canada was a loyal colony of Britain. This loyalty was shared amongst the British Canadians, so when the Canadian citizens heard Britain needed their help the first Canadian citizens formed the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, or The Patricia's for short. After training in Valcartier camp, the Patricia's sailed to Britain to train some more and then joined the war in France where the development of Canadian independence began. This event in time is significant to Canada independence as Canada did not fully rely not Britain to defend a larger border, but instead showed leadership and protected the full border with no or little help from the entente until reinforcements arrived. Another example of the early stages of Canadian independence was shown it the battle of the Somme where many of the surviving Canadians from Ypre joined with newer requites to further develop Canada independence. After winning the battle of the Somme the triple entente discovered that Canada was not lesser then Britain therefore Canada was respected by the entente .
