Each culture has its own identity. Canadians are often likened to Americans; something many Canadians take exception to. Canadians are proud of their Canadianisms and are not afraid to poke fun at themselves. The movie Canadian Bacon takes this portrayal to an extreme. Its humour is based on the identity of both cultures and the stereotypes that have developed over the years. Although entertaining, the portrayal is more satirical than accurate. In most cases, it is an inaccurate portrayal of Canadians and their southern neighbours. Although we may find Canadian Bacon funny we should not think or promote this film as an accurate representation of Canadian and American behaviour. One common misconception that is used in the movie is that Canadians are overly kind, polite and apologetic. In one scene there is a Canadian crowd outside the CN Tower and the group of Americans start shoving their way through the crowd. Even though the Americans are being rude - another stereotypical portrayal - the Canadians are constantly apologizing. The entire comedy comes from this and is what makes the movie enjoyable to watch. It would probably only be understood by a Canadian or American viewer because the portrayals are so stereotypical. The satire is not aimed at only one culture but goes back and forth between the two. Both cultures are shown to be equally guilty of inaccurate belief regarding the other. Although funny this is not accurate and is not meant to be. The extreme use of the “jokes” makes sure the viewer knows that they are not meant to be truthful. In this way, the movie is an accurate portrayal of an inaccurate set of beliefs and should be enjoyed as
