Article Presentation
The topic I chose to research and present is cancer. The article that I used for my source is titled “Cancer” from the Times Health Guide in The New York Times. The article included the description of cancer, the causes of cancer, the symptoms of cancer, the tests/exams used for cancer, the treatments used for cancer and the types of cancers.
Also known as carcinoma, or a malignant tumor, Cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled increase or progression of abnormal cells in one’s body. Although the causes for many cancers remains unknown, some causes of cancer consist of benzene and other chemicals, drinking excess alcohol, obesity, excess exposure to the sun, viruses, and even genetics. Most cancer deaths are caused by lung cancer. The four most commonly known cancers in the United States are prostate cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer. Some other forms of cancer are brain cancer, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, leukemia, skin cancer among many others. The most commonly known symptoms of cancer are chills, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss and night sweats. The most used exams or tests are chest X-Ray, CT scan, MRI scan, complete blood count and bone marrow biopsy. Treatments for cancer depend on the type of cancer. For cancer that stays in one spot the treatment used is surgery, to remove the cancer. For lymphoma, chemo and radiation are used. The most used treatments are chemo therapy and radiation.
Typically, regardless of treatment, cancer is a terrible disease that most of the time results in death. However, there are many ways that one can reduce the risk of getting a cancerous tumor including eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, exercising regularly and reducing sun exposure. There are also cancer screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies and breast exams which could help in identifying and treating cancerous cells, if caught in their early stages.
