Cancers are a large family of diseases which cause abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body
.
There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma
.
Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems
.
The body is made up of many types of cells
.
These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy
.
When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells
.
However, sometimes this orderly process goes wrong
.
DNA of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division
.
When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them
.
The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor .
Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function
.
Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be severe
.
More dangerous, or malignant, tumors form when two things occur a cancerous cell manages to move throughout the

.
The great majority of cancers, some 9095% of cases, are due to environmental factors
.
The remaining 510% are due to inherited genetics. Environmental, as used by cancer researchers, means any cause that is not inherited genetically, such as lifestyle, economic and behavioral factors, and not merely pollution
.

Common environmental factors that contribute to cancer death include tobacco 2530%, diet and obesity
3035%, infections 1520%, radiation both ionizing and nonionizing, up to 10%, stress, lack of physical activity, and environmental pollutants
.
Most cancers are initially recognized either because of the appearance of signs or symptoms or through screening . Most people are distressed to learn that they have cancer
.
They may become extremely anxious and depressed
.
The risk of suicide in people with cancer is approximately double the normal risk
.
Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors are the easiest to prevent
.
For example, choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lower the risk of several types of cancer, most notably lung, throat, mouth, and liver cancer
.
Even if you
