His works, especially this book, is still well known and is still read to carry on his theories of the world in his time. The novel, published by himself, was written in 1759. Voltaire also published this book in France. My teacher selected this book for our class to read to strengthen our knowledge on the age of enlightenment along with past time periods and events. Voltaire had a special way of writing that was humorous. He made fun of many events and political groups within his time period to express his opinions. This helped give the reader an insight on the publics opinion of the world and its aspects at the time.

Later, Pangloss is killed and Candide realizes that relying on a philosophy won’t help him move forward in life. On page 32 it states “ Pangloss deceived be cruelly when he said that all is for the best in the world”. His love and determination helped him go about life in a better way than any philosophy. Knowing that Candide is very against the church, he felt strongly that there should be more freedom and less conflict. When he came across a land called El Dorado, he was surprised. It was free of suffering and many other problems that the church caused. Candide loved this idea of El Dorado and it seemed to be a dream come true. He had found quality land he was looking for but, he knew he couldn’t stay because he had to be reunited with his true love Cunegonde to be truly happy. Another theme that was carried along the storyline was religion. Candide was constantly being affected by the actions of the church. Voltaire strongly believed in religious equality although, he disliked christians for their harsh expectations. In the story, it was portrayed
