People of the Jury, Captain Henry Wirz is indeed guilty of committing war crime due to the inhumane ways of running the camp and mistreating the prisoners. War crime are defined as in the statute that established the International Criminal Court, which includes: Grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, such as: Willful killing, wilfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health ,and acts of omissions which involves using starvation of civilians as an act of punishment or failure to provide sufficient medical care. It does show that in some ways, Henry Wirz did improved the camp in a very slight way, he could’ve done more to improve the situation even though he doesn't have enough supplies as the inspector have said; According …show more content…
The Confederates was unable to provide adequate food, clothing, and shelter. Now, in the movie Andersonville, everyday someone dies due to the lack of nutrition that their body clearly needed. The only water source that was available to the prisoners was a tiny swamp which is contaminated due to the waste that is pilling up. Furthermore, the prisoners were lacking of good shelter that will keep them dry when it rains. And what was Henry Wirz response to the inspector? “The Commander of the Confederates just kept sending prisoners.” Sure that he was unable due provide all the necessities due to the lack of supplies, but that is not a solid reason to neglect the prisoners. Captain Henry Wirz could build a waterflow to the camp to wash down the waster and to replace the contaminated water, he could've send some of his guards out to go to a nearest farm and collect food or gather materials from the woods to build habitable shelter for the prisoners. Yes he improved the camp, by very little, but it wasn't enough. Captain Henry Wirz could talk to the Commander and tell him that the situation of the camp will get worst if they kept sending prisoners, but instead he kept his mouth shut, he kept accepting prisoners because he wanted to
