Captain John Smith was one the best European explorers that has ever lived. John Smith lived an adventurous life as a soldier. He also faced some hardships in his life. Smith was a brave and honorable soldier and explorer. He fought in the military and once was enslaved. John Smith played a key role in the colony of Jamestown. Without John Smith, Jamestown wouldn’t have done very well on its own. Captain John Smith was one the best explorers europe has ever had.
John Smith was born in 1580 in Lincolnshire, England. He was born into a farmer family. Smith was child of George and Alice Smith. He went to school in his early years. At some point in his life he tried ran away from home and wanted to become sailor, but couldn’t. His father, George, stopped him from running away. Smith became an apprentice of merchant. He learned the merchant’s trade. At some point his father died and he went to join the military of England and fought the Spanish.

During their trip, Smith was accused of mutiny and arrested and was almost hanged. He remained arrested for a few weeks and was later released. The colony struggled in the beginning. The colonists were starving and dying of diseases. Jamestown wasn’t the only community, there was a lot of native american communities around. The colony decided to overthrow the president of the Jamestown and a man named John Ratcliffe became president. Smith decided to go to one of the Native American villages called Powhatan villages and get food. He went on expeditions. During the expeditions, the group got captured by a native group and taken to Chief Powhatan ( the leader of the Powhatan) and some were killed. Smith had survived because a girl named Pocahontas saved him and afterwards Powhatan gave him territory and expected loyalty and protection from Smith. Historians believed that Smith went through a ceremony to become an adopted son of the chief and was given the
