Psychologists study the human mind and behavior by using the scientific method. They gather information by performing laboratory experiments or by testing the personality, performance, or intelligence of their patients. Other methods psychologists use for research include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys. Psychologists working in the health service field provide mental health care for patients in hospitals, clinics, schools, or even private settings. Although psychologists usually specialize in one area, they apply their knowledge to a wide area including health and human services, management, and education.

There is often some confusion about who psychologists are and exactly what they do. Usually, information concerning the profession is not always easy to find, and even psychology majors can hold inaccurate beliefs. There are various different fields that Psychology can be applied to. For instance, health psychologists study how biological, psychological, and social factors affect health and illness, and help their patients adjust to illness and treatment. Developmental psychologists study a person’s physiological, cognitive, and social development throughout life. Some specialize in behavior during infancy, childhood, and adolescence, or life changes that occur during old age. Neuropsychologists study the relation between the brain and behavior, and often work with patients who have suffered from a stroke
