Carmelo Anthony Case Study

There is one very obvious drawback in Carmelo Anthony's game. It isn't shooting, defense, IQ, or anything like that. It is simply his ego, but he is enough of a head case that this continues to be a problem. No matter what team Carmelo seems to be apart of, he is a parasitic and destructive player to his team's success. In the playoffs with the Thunder, he averaged 11.8 points per game on 37.5% shooting from the field, and 21.4% shooting from 3. It is unfair to criticize a player based on their performance in one single playoff series, but these numbers are not far behind his regular season statistics, and is clear why he played so horribly. Carmelo wanted to step up and be the alpha dog of his team, but Paul George and Russell Westbrook were both much more capable in that position.

In the video shown above, Carmelo laughed at the idea of coming off of the bench at the beginning of the season. That is another perfect example of how Melo's ego is ruining him. If he never figures out his place and continues to demand a starting, leadership role, on a team that already has a star small forward, then the Thunder will continue to fail.

A great example of what Melo should be is Dwyane Wade. Early on in the season, Wade started for the Cavs, but J.R. Smith spoke with the coach, Tyronn Lue, about how he thought he deserved the starting role. Lue spoke to Wade about this, and Wade easily accepted the offer to come off the bench, and bring his veteran and scoring experience. Wade was traded back to the Miami Heat at the trade deadline, and still comes off of the bench happily. If Carmelo was capable of doing this, the Thunder would not have such a huge problem with scoring once the starters are off of the
