Carol Dweck on ‘Growth Mindsets’ and ‘Fixed Mindsets’

Students with the fixed mindset prefer to exert as little effort as possible whereas students with the growth mindset wanted to work harder. In fact, a study conducted found that students with the fixed mindset showed decrease in grades over two years whereas growth mindset students showed an improvement. (Dweck., p. 57)
Janine Escalante decided to teach students who attended one of the worsts schools the growth mindset. Their grades were high enough to gain them college credits. (Dweck., p. 64)

As proven, the fixed mindset limits achievement, the mindset causes a lack of effort and causes conflicting thoughts. (Dweck., p. 67)
Significant minorities of women do not attempt to finish college due to the damage caused by stereotypes. Mainly in the math and science department, especially women with a fixed mindset as they believed they didn’t belong. Whereas; women with the growth mindset felt a sense of belonging. (Dweck., p. 77)

It gave me a false security so as I grew I never tried to develop extra skills. As I was afraid to disappoint everyone if I failed, in grade 9, my teacher told me I needed to perform in front of the class for an improvisation game. I had no experience with drama prior and embarrassed myself. I was told I would have to do it again for the rest of the year. I vowed to get better and with doing that it alleviated the sense of failure and instead was replaced with the purpose of growth.
