In this article, the author used many ethos appeals to try to hook the reader and convince them that college, in fact, is a waste of time. Although there are many fallacies brought up, they are later backed by good statistics and sources. This turns the article into a nice opinionated argument. Caroline Bird in, College is a Waste of Time and Money, first takes a stab at college by trying to explain that it is a huge waste of time. Bird says, “They sell college like soap, promoting features they think students want: innovative programs, and environment conducive to meaningful personal relationships, and a curriculum so free that it does not sound like a college at all.” Colleges add anything they can to get students to go to their school. Whether it be improving campus, giving scholarships, or lowering price. Some colleges may even go as far as using things to bribe students to attend their university. These appeals make sense and are backed by her great explanation. She writes that college actually makes students go far into debt. Once these students get out of college there is no guarantee of a job right away. After the student graduates they turn them loose, making the student deal with his or her enormous debt built up after attending their university for four years. …show more content…
The author repeats many times that going to college has almost become a fad or something that everybody does. It is thought in the United States today that if you do not go to college, then it is almost impossible to get a good job with today’s tough economy.
