Upon looking at examples of Caroline’s writing next to the indicators for experimental writing and early writing phases, I was able to come up with some strategies to help with her writing along with some useful strategies to aid her in spelling. The first skill I wanted to help Caroline’ grasp was when to use capital letters since she used capital letters intermittently throughout her writing and spelling sample. Young children are constantly surrounded by the use of capital letters from name signs hung on the child’s bedroom wall, T.V. shows such as Sesame Street, food labels like CHEEZ- ITs and even city signs like a STOP sign. I would ask the student to write a letter to anybody they wanted to. I would have the letter on paper with wide sentence lines and have the beginning and end of the letter written like the picture below.

This way, the student could see what the beginning of a letter would love like begin capitalized then it would give the student the opportunity to practice writing names starting with a capital letter, and the beginning of sentences with a capital letter . This activity would help the emphasize when to use and not to use capital letters due to the practice the student would be doing along with the help of the anchor chart.
Another goal I would like to reach is helping Caroline progress to the next stage of spelling. To support this student in her spelling development I would use a couple different strategies to emphasize consonant digraphs and consonant blends. I would want Caroline to see that a consonant digraph is two letters that make a new sound or a single sound such as kn makes the sound of /n/, or ph makes the sound of /f/. A great way to show this student how to spot various graphemes within a word is to have her make a visual representation of different consonant diagraphs such as the picture
