Jody Studdard’s “Silence in Center” is concentrated on a fourteen-year old girl name Melody Gold who suffered from hearing impairment. Melody played and was very good at little league (Studdard). The novel tells the story of a girl who want to play select ball and how her dad wanted to help her find a team. They main reason for the obstacles they faced is because of the disability. It is the hearing impairment and hearing aids of Melody that is being questioned in the beginning of the novel as they try to look for a select ball team. She played little league, but wanted to move on to play select ball (Studdard). Melody’s performance is closely analyzed by the different select ball coaches and at times she finds herself in very vulnerable situations. With the disability allowing some coaches to deny her from making a team, it only agitated Melody and her dad, but her dad also encouraged her not to give up. It was the determination of her dad that helps them both to keep their heads up proudly. Melody suffers because of her hearing impairment because coaches think it would hinder her communication with the other teammates. Nevertheless, all of her try out performances was great, but it did not change the feelings of the coaches about her disability. Jody Studdard novel shows that a person should not suffer because of a disability. They should have the same opportunities as anyone else. As Melody does everything possible to make the different teams– her trainer gives her and her dad a chance to be happy by referring them to a team he knew very well.
