Summary & Description of the Problem

According to the study , Century Airlines had been struggling with a crisis about a development plan called , the Century Spirit program . The program was designed by human resources to built commitment and boost morale at their workplace. The task for the program was designed to create an open communication between workers and managers as well as adding individual spirit to their work performance.
By December 1990 , plan continued with giving awards to the employees who achieved their performance target and a bi-weekly newspaper called the Plane Truth.

The spirit program seemed to work successfully to up lifting morale of the employees. When out-side sources begin create difficulties for the company –such as gas prices , management cut back hours and set higher goals for the workers. This crises crate an uncertainty at the work place and writers of the newspaper started to publish negative articles about company. The articles created frustration and reinforcing for the century spirit program. Now, the newspaper was in use for stirring up trouble instead of boosting team spirit.

Managers were concerned about the newspaper and its negative outcomes .Managers had to come up with a solution where they can stop negativity and tension in that paper or stop publishing it. The magement team argued that the newspaper could be damaging because when the articles carries negativity, employees could loose their morale. Management also worried that this negativity could pass on to the customers and can effects the business of the company to a negative direction.

According to the Alfred A. Checchi , there is hope for Century Airlines. He mentions that the newspaper is great source for the management team because it reveals information about what is floating around. A.A. Checci , believes that customers` reacting is shouldn’t be a problem for the management. He thinks that employees thinking , cannot reflect the success of the management level. Employees should be able to talk their problems and excitations and it is a benefit for the management
