Habitat For Humanity Construction Leader A group of my friends volunteered to help build housing for a weekend at a Habitat for Humanity jobsite. Due to an emergency, the Habitat construction leader cannot be there to supervise. Based on my knowledge of wood frame construction, I need to write a description that discusses the task of erecting the wood frame. Habitat for humanity has already built the concrete foundation walls, and all of the lumber and tools are delivered, so that will be my starting point. Step one is to place the beam in the middle of the top of the foundation, and set the posts below until it is perfectly level. Using three to four people, lift the beam and set it in the notches of the fountation. This beam will run long-ways from end to end. Adjust the posts until it is perfectly level. This beam minimizes floor sagging and is structurally necessary for the integrity of the house.

The walls consist of sole plates nailed to the subflooring. Use the supplied 92-5/8” Precut for studs which are nailed to the sole plates, 16” apart on center and top plates are nailed to the studs. It's always easier to nail on sheathing before raising the walls, so while its laying down install the exterior sheating by nailing plywood to the outer walls. Walls are typically assembled in one piece on the floor then stood up by several workers and then secured to the floor. Be sure to leave “rough opening” for any doors and windows, and use double 2x8 headers separated by 3/8” plywood spacers in the framing for proper weight distribution. Be sure to “square” the frame by using tape measures and levels. Use temporary diagonal bracing to keep the walls level and square. Construct the opposite wall, then the walls in between, and continue to use temporary bracing as necessary. Connect the tops of the walls by installing an overlapping “second” top plate. Fasten the corners together by using nails and lag
