Prescription Medication Use Among Self Neglecting Elderly According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (2013) almost a half of American population reports to using at least one prescription drug in the past 30 days, with the rise of use likely comes a rise in abuse and misuse. The elderly use approximately one-third of the prescription medication in the United States, often for problems such as chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety (Culberson et al., 2011). The purpose of this study was to investigate and attempt to better describe the use of prescription medication, specifically benzodiazepines and opioid analgesics in community dwelling self neglecting elderly.

The sample group and the control groups where both chosen based on several specific inclusions and requirements, thus the data is unbiased and suitable for measuring distinct outcomes. Five cases from the self neglect group and four from the outpatient clinic did not complete the study and majority in both groups where female (66%) and African American (54-62%). The data was assessed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS
