Academics versus Social Life and Campus Involvement at Tarleton State University
Introduction
College is an experience that could be described as a period of growth, maturation, and, more notably, difficulty. Factors like bad time management, campus distractions, and temptations are serious issues that perpetuate struggles of incoming students. It is common for college students to be put in situations where they must make a decision about what action would result in long-term academic success. These situations can include choosing between going out with a group of friends to go to a party or rejecting the occasion in order to begin academic coursework, studying for an incoming test or meeting with a study group. Involvement and socialization can have a positive impact on a student. However, are Tarleton students focusing more on extra-curricular activities and their own social life to where they leave little to no room for academics? Extra-curricular activities are usually performed throughout the whole year, resulting in one being consistently busy. Students are prone to moving study time if they believe there is something more interesting to do. In this paper, I will answer my initial question: “What level of priority is academics in relation to Tarleton Students’ social life and campus involvement?” I will analyze how often students study and how their actions reflects their grade point …show more content…
Although there was a minor group of individuals who were not primarily academically driven, they did not represent the majority of the students surveyed. Therefore, I concluded that the majority of students at Tarleton are more cognizant about their grades than any other aspect embedded in their college life. Aside from the academic focus of a university, students also seek interest in extra-curricular activities and social engagements. However, what is unequivocally more important to a student is their overall academic success. In the article, “The Decline of Studying”, which suggests that students are studying less, I was able to demonstrate that students at Tarleton are more academically driven; however, there are other factors that can influence their decisions. In my results, a majority (twenty students) said that they would ensure their academics are situated before they were to go out to a party. This overall reveals that many students at Tarleton have standards in place to succeed academically. My studies also showed that the majority of students were not academically weak as the article “Today’s Students: Same as Always, but More So” suggested. I was surprised by my findings because there are many distractions that could engage students more to the point that it completely hinders their
