MAYCOMB— Yesterday morning, Judge Taylor and an all white jury presided over Tom Robinson’s case of the accused 1934 rape of 19 year old Mayella Ewell. After over two hours of deliberation, the jury concluded the defendant, 25 year old Tom Robinson, guilty of rape.

The crime in question took place on November 26th of last year on the Ewell property. Tom Robinson had supposedly raped and beat Mayella after an invitation into her house.

Mr. Gilmer of the prosecution called upon three witnesses, the county sheriff, Heck Tate; Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell; and the plaintiff, Mayella Ewell. Each witness was cross-examined by Atticus Finch, Robinson’s defence lawyer.

During Finch’s cross-examination, Tate confirmed Mayella’s right eye was bruised.
