Ernest Lawrence Thayer uses many examples of humor to describe Casey's experiences in "Casey at the Bat" He uses personification and hyperbole's the most. I think he did this so the poem is not boring and has a little more flavor to it.

For example the author says "it pounded on the mountain." "It" referring to the voices of the crowd. This is an example of personification, because voices can not literally pound on mountains. The author did this to give you a picture, and to show how enthused the crowd is. Another example of humor is "now the air is shattered by the force of Casey's blow."
