During this time, both Cash and Carter were married, but both of them loved each other. With June Carter being Johnny’s song writer and always traveling with him, it made staying faithful to their spouses even more complicated. But in this first verse, he sings of how love of another woman has made his life intricate. He feels as if this burning passion inside him was like standing in a ring of fire. Singing of being “bound by wild desire” was for him knowing that Carter was the woman he forever wanted, a feeling, which placed him even deeper into the ring of fire. Although at this point he has remained faithful, later in the song he sings,
“The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild”

He has given me strength to face past illnesses, and victory in the face of defeat. He has given me life and joy where other saw oblivion. He has given new purpose to live for, new services to render and old wounds to heal.
