In Joseph L. Mankiewicz exquisite version of William Shakepeare’s play, ”Julius Caesar,” he does a fantastic job of mastering Shakespeare’s detailed craftsmanship. “Julius Caesar” takes place in Rome in 44 B.C., and it is a tense, melodramatic story, clearly presented, and brilliantly acted by one of the finest casts assembled for a film. This entire film has a sense of a tense atmosphere, where matters in question, such as envy, betrayal, ambition, honor, loyalty, tyranny, the power and the fragility of it are addressed. In Julius Caesar, Louis Calhern plays the role of Julius, whose triumphs have empowered him to ascend to the status of Roman dictator. John Gielgud does a terrific job of embodying Cassius’ jealous behavior and demanding demeanor. He is easily able to convince others of the Roman Senate that Caesar would be an unfit and unruly monarch, and is then on able to become the mastermind behind Caesar’s death. Cassius is troubled by Caesar’s popularity and tyrannical status. Cassius was filled with envy and believes that Caesar’s political execution would be the best thing for Rome, therefore he teams up with Casca, played by Edmond O’Brien, and the influential Brutus, played by James Mason, to plan Caesar’s homicide. Caesar enters confidently into the Roman Senate, oblivious to the fact that he is about to get murdered. As he continues to walk inside of the room, his conspirators stab him to death. His confidante Marc Antony, played by Marlon Brando, is shocked and runs to the corpse of his dearly beloved friend. Marlon Brando is truly a phenomenon in this
