1-Catalhoyuk
In the mid -1900’s, in central Turkey, James Mellaart discovered and excavated what is understood to be one of the world’s first Neolithic settlements at Catalhoyuk. This settlement existed from approximately 7200-6300 BCE and was the home to roughly 8,000 people. Although these residents originated at hunters and gathers, they later began to grow grains and raise animals for food. They are considered to be the first group of people that survived off of food they grew and raised on their own. The architecture of these structures were very unique, they didn’t have doors or windows; one would enter the home by a ladder from the roof. Ovens and basic furniture, such as shelves and seats, were built into the walls. As more research is being done it is becoming apparent that art was very important to these people. The homes were full of figurines, sculptures, baskets, pottery, and it is said that the walls were painted with murals of shapes and animals. I found it interesting that their homes also served as

This code was originated during the reign of Emperor Hammurabi. It also had concepts that are similar to modern America, for example: anyone who had been done unlawfully had the right to request compensation for their troubles. Another similarity to today was that women were represented by the code of law. While women of the time were still inferior to males they were not seen as property to their husbands. Women had rights to own property and conduct other forms of business that even in America’s recent history, women were not allowed to take part in. It is apparent that many of the same ideas and principles of government that were used in ancient times are still thriving
