In "Catch the Moon", Luis, the main character, changed throughout the short story. After his mother's death, Luis organized a "social group" at Central High. For the two year he has attended the school, he has been in trouble. The group's members were mainly high school age boys who found amusement in harassing their local authorities. Activities he used to not associate with became apart of his daily life. Luis was sent to juvenile hall for six months after he and his new friends broke into a house. After returning home, he was sentenced to six months of work as his dad's business, Jorge Cintrón & Son Auto Parts. Her mother moved to the United States with the intention and goal of fame. Throughout many different categories, the mother tried her hardest to make Jing-mei into a prodigy. First, the mother saw Shirley Temple on their television and immediately wanted her daughter to be like Shirley. Jing-mei had her hair cut like Shirley Temple, but as much as her mother tried, she refused to think about going on television. Her mother tried again, but this time wanted Jing-mei to have much knowledge. Jing-mei tried multiple times, but could not please her mother. The mother was determined, but Jing-mei started to not give effort. Her mother's final idea came to her, again, while watching the television. She watched while a young girl played a piece of music on the piano. After seeing this, she had Jing-mei practice everyday for two hours. Jing-mei tried, but soon became frustrated and started to lose interest. One day, she yelled at her mom, saying, "I wish I weren't your daughter."
