To begin, the protagonists in both works are similar to each other because in The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby, the characters live in the past, however, Jay Gatsby is blinded by the fact and constantly needs to be reminded of his current state of mind. The Catcher in the Rye is a novel that revolves around Holden Caulfield and in this case, the struggle to live in the future. The message that Holden is trying to interpret is that she is prearranged and wants Jane to be left alone as Holden wants to protect Jane’s innocence from Stradlater, whose intention is to have sex with Jane but Holden is jealous and does not want that to happen.
