“The whole lobby was empty. It smelled like fifty million dead cigars. It really did. I wasn’t sleepy or anything, but I was feeling sort of lousy. Depressed and all. I almost wished I was dead.” That is a quote from the story “Catcher in the Rye” of a theme of depression. In the story “Catcher in the Rye”, by J.D Salinger it examines the topic of depression. He notes that the main character Holden suffers with depression, but does not realize it till his parents get him the help. Ultimately what Salinger examines Holden is depressed.
Depression is caused by many things. Depression can be caused by trauma caused by a death from someone close to them, a significant illness or any form of abuse can develope the depression, however trauma from the past can also cause it.(“Teen Depression”) The long term consequences of depression could be social, educational, and emotional development that can occur for teens. (“Teen Depression”) People with depression could also have symptoms of being sad, empty, anxious, hopelessness, restless, trouble staying still, difficult time falling asleep, early morning awakening, oversleeping. Holden sometimes does not know what to feel. At times he is in a good mood then he is upset and is think about suicide. In “Catcher in the Rye” you can catch Holden depressed for a few reasons. He was depressed due to his brothers loss, also due to being lonely. Holden would try to reconnect with people in his past and talk to him because he did not like being by himself. Holden has met a older men in the elevator that can get him a prostitute However, he ended up just talking to her about life. Holden has had some miscommunication with them men in the elevator and Holden ended up getting beaten up in his hotel
