Catcher In the Rye Questions 18-21
1.Symbol Phone Calls
When Holden makes phone calls they represent how lonely he is and how and is always isolated.Holden tries to call someone but he has nobody. ‘’The trouble was though, my address book only has about three people in it.’’(Salinger 136) When Holden goes to try to talk someone he realizes that he has nobody but only a little bit of people. Holden failure of the phone calls also represents the failure of connecting with people.

2. Symbol:Movies
Holden’s representation of the movies show how Holden is never going live a happy ending. Holden thinks as movies as phony because he realizes that he will never have a happy ending.

Holden rushes to try picece back the pieces of the record because trying to keep all the innocence he doesn’t have anymore. ‘’I damn near cried , it made me feel so terrible.”(Salinger 154) Holden buys the record for Phoebe because he wants her to maintain her innocence. But when he drops the record in the park, it shatters.
6. Symbolism : Ducks/Pond
Holden and the ducks/pond are similar by the fact that Holden has to make a decision where to go ,and ducks have too. Holden starts to realize that there and is no ducks and the pond is frozen making the ducks go somewhere else. ‘’But I didn’t see any ducks around.’’ (Salinger 154) Holden is living in Frozen environment himself too because he keeps having too move place to place. Holden also has too forced to move and has to figure where he is going to have to go.
7.Holden’s family and Holden are very impacted by Allie’s death and still can’t get over what happened. Holden then describes on how his mom is very devastated and how much she is hurt. ‘’ Especially my mother, because she still isn’t over my brother Allie yet.’’(Salinger 155) Holden also describes how he wasn’t there for the funeral and that he was mad about it. Holden wonders about his own mortality, which is a major part of his obsession with Allie's
