The intelligence in Holden is lost in his dishonesty, consumption of alcohol and lack of trying. The book “The Catcher In The Rye” by J.D Salinger captures all the highs and lows of Holden’s life. Initially, as Holden shares false accusations while under the consumption of alcohol, he says he can drink a lot and not get drunk. Furthermore, he can be a bad influence on the people around him including himself. Finally, the society we live in today thinks beauty is better than brains.

Holden explains his capacity for alcohol. It leaves the reader to question the words that come out of his mouth, Holden thinks everyone is a phony but in truth he is a phony as well. He hides from his problems with alcohol, even though he says the alcohol does

Holden ran home to find phoebe their but not his parents, phoebe was excited but yet confused why Holden was home so early, because he was not suppose to be home till Christmas break. She came to a conclusion that he got expelled from Pencey Prep, she started to freak out she says, “daddy’s going to kill you, daddy’s going to kill you”. Holden has to make her lie for him because if his dad finds out he got expelled from another school he might freak out for a bit but than send him to another school which Holden does not want. He also lies to Ms. Marrow, Ernest Marrows mother on the train. He told Ms. Marrow that he is an angel and that he is doing very well but he is to shy, it made Ms. Marrow happy to know her son is doing well but when she will find out that he is not that angel Holden described she may not trust anyone who tell her how well her son is doing, she may not believe anything he says to her and might keep him under close call. He also lies to Sally Hayes telling her all the stuff he was going to do with her, but when she realizes he does not like her way she likes him she turns down the run away together plan he had with her.
