On July 16, 1951, The Catcher in the Rye was originally published. It is a controversial novel written by J.D. Salinger. It was originally published for adults, but has become popular among young adults and teenagers for it’s themes of teenage anxiety and alienation. However, between 1966 and 1975, it was the most frequently banned book.
I believe that the Catcher in the Rye should not be censored. It is a novel from which high school students can benefit. It is a book that shows teens that they are not alone. Many other adolescents go through what they are going through. Throughout the novel, Holden Caulfield is complaining. He voices his frustrations with dating, lost love, and especially phonies.

They are correct; the novel is inappropriate. However, teenagers in this generation are watching movies and television shows way worse. A popular teen drama show, Gossip Girl, promoted premarital sex, underage drinking, profanity, violence, and disrespect. Gossip Girl won 18 teen choice awards. If The Catcher in the Rye was made into a movie, it would only be considered PG-13. Studies show that 4 out of 5 teenagers have sex during their teenage years. If teenagers feel mature enough to have sex, then why aren’t they mature enough to read about it? Lastly, I believe in freedom of speech. Everyone should have the chance to say what they want to say. Also, everyone should have the chance to listen.
In conclusion, I still believe that The Catcher in the Rye should not be censored. It is a novel from which high school students can benefit. It helps them get through some of the toughest times of their lives and lets them know that they are not alone. It speaks to
