Throughout the series of events that occurred within the Importance of Being Earnest, one may explore the significance of Bunburying, which is the act of taking on another persona. Relating to the story, we see two characters that pretend to be a man called Earnest. Due to these two characters undergoing Bunburying shocking events occur as a result. Their false identities leave Gwendolyn to fall in a dishonest love with Jack and Cicely with Aldernon. The ladies are actually only infatuated with the untrue name of Earnest, not necessarily even the men themselves; yet this lie resulted in some very important realizations and friendships. These events are all positive attributes of this action; it shows that sometimes taking on another identity gives you an outcome you would not have concluded if you stayed your true self. Within society today we see a lot of this action occurring. People are so wrapped up in being that picture perfect individual, they conceal their true identify behind their computer screens and take on an untrue persona. This action is known as, Catfishing. In the play we see the two men take on another identity because the women they are attracted to are drawn to the name Earnest. Catfishing can be a dangerous and manipulative way to attract a significant other; although it really allows you to get to know the person for more then what is portrayed on the outside. When Catfishing One is able to remove that veil of ignorance and understand a human for their personality and soul. We see in the play that Gwendolyn was merely attracted only to the name and when she realized his true name of Jack, she took back her feelings and was disgusted by what she saw.
