Catherine II(1729-1796) was one of the most successful leaders of Russian History. She was born into an influential royal family Stettin, Germany, and lived there for the majority of her childhood until an arranged marriage to the heir of the Russian throne, Grand Peter Fyodorovich, brought her to Russia in 1744 at age 15. When he died, she took over and became Empress of Russia. She ruled for 34 years, from 1762 to 1796(Comire). The period in which she ruled was a time when Enlightened ideas were spread throughout much of Europe, and many of these ideas appeared in Russia during her time. She is often referred to as “Catherine the Great” because of the positive changes that occurred in Russia during the time of her rule. Her era is looked upon as a time of unprecedented political growth and improvement. Catherine the Great’s unique upbringing and background greatly affected and benefited her leadership style, policies, and ideas during her rule because of the education she received, the power of the family that she was born into, and the importance of education for her and her family.
