The subtle screening inventory-3 (SASSI-3) is designed to identify if there is a likelihood of a substance dependence disorder (Pittenger, 2003). Fernandez (2003) and Pittenger (2003) discuss how the SASSI-3 is an easy screening to administer as it has 14 face valid items and 67 subtle screening items that clients self-report. Further, it can be objectively scored in a matter of minutes (Fernandez, 2003), thus, making it an efficient screening. The SASSI-3 was formed from data that was gathered from a large sample, but the respondents were from addiction facilities, psychiatric hospitals, vocational rehabilitation programs, and sex offender treatment programs (Fernandez, 2003). Therefore, the norming group may not be representative of the college student population (Whiston, 2013). Although the screening was designed for adults, it seems to fail at being representative of this population. This would make it hard to determine if the assessment is actually valid and reliable for use with college students. However, it does provide different normative data for males and females (Pittenger, 2003). Another issue that may arise is that the SASSI-3 only provides a high or low probability of dependence (Fernandez, 2003), which could make it difficult to accurately screen for substance dependence. Both Fernandez (2003) and Pittenger (2003) state that this screening should be used with caution. …show more content…
