The Bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Beginning of the Pacific War What was the cause behind the attack and the result that the U.S. decided, that started this awful war between Japan and the United States in 1941 in the Pacific. Some background information on Pearl Harbor is, it is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and it is one of the biggest naval headquarters in the United States. There were 100 ships at Pearl Harbor before the attack, of those 100, 18 were sunk and 5 of those 18 were battleships. Only two ships were not able to be repaired, those two ships were the USS Arizona and Oklahoma. Two ships are still on the Pearl Harbor floor, these two ships are the USS Arizona and the Utah. Pearl Harbor and the naval fleet there is where Japan decided to strike on December 7, 1941, and it did not take long for the information on the both the attack and Japan to reach U.S. President Franklin D Roosevelt, and how the United States responded to this attack started the Pacific War. At around 1:30 the afternoon of the attack, President Roosevelt was conferring with advisor Harry Hopkins. During the talk that Roosevelt and Harry were having Navy Secretary Frank Knox had busted through the door and announced that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor at around 6:40 that morning. On December 8, the day after the devastating attack, President Roosevelt was speaking to Congress and called the attack on December 7,1941 “A day that will live in infamy”.
