How did slavery start? It turns out that imperialism in Africa was one of the leading causes of imperialism. Imperialism is the act of one country taking over and controlling economic, social, and other aspects of another country. During the 18th and 19th centuries, many European countries were imperialistic and were conquering the lands of Africa, making them colonies. These new colonies affected both the European conquerors and the African civilians in social and economic ways. Europeans benefited from more natural resources and gained a superiority over Africans. Africans, however, were forced to work for Europeans and were treated like they were not worth anything.
