The Kansas-Nebraska Act divided the Louisiana Purchase into Kansas and Nebraska territory. These territories had popular sovereignty, meaning people within the area could vote to ban slavery or not. As a result, the 36'30 line was removed. Countless people supporting anti-slavery and pro-slavery rushed to Kansas in order to vote.
