“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” This is a quote from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address that describes what was going on in the United States. The United States of America was conceived from the ideas of our founding fathers which at the time seemed to work well for the newly formed country. As time progressed there were people with opposing ideas on topics such as slavery, protective tariffs, and whether or not to join the union. These issues caused a great divide between the North and the South. The North was against slavery they did not feel that it helped them because they did not have a farming economy.
