I observed in the Central School District No. 104 at Central Elementary School with Mrs. Kristin Murphy. Central Elementary School hosts students from prekindergarten through the fourth grade. Mrs. Murphy has been a teacher for over twenty years at three different schools in private and public settings. She has been working at Central Elementary since 2013 as one of their four second grade teachers. Her current classroom contains seventeen students, including four boys and thirteen girls, and teaches all of the standard curriculum courses, which I observed over the period of my attendance. This experience allowed me to gain insight of the inner workings of today’s elementary schools and how teachers structure a successful classroom.

Due to a compacted area and space restrictions, there is little decoration to make the school look welcoming or friendly. However, the inside of the school building has a very warm environment with students’ work hanging throughout the hallways and on the walls. The walls and tile floors are a rainbow of colors, and the ceiling contains many skylights that make the school glow. Although small, Mrs. Murphy’s classroom has informational posters and multiple projects decorating the walls, cubbies for each student’s work, and an individual desk with storage for every student. Students have three laptops available to take AR tests, a large number of Mrs. Murphy’s classroom books and their own library books to read, and a collection of art supplies to use during their free time. With all of these elements fitting into one relatively small classroom, it is essential that Mrs. Murphy maintain organization to prevent a chaotic, overstimulating
