During the Cultural Revolution, there was an old lady and husband that gave away 120 grams worth of gold to the commune headquarters in Jiangtou Town. They found out that after the revolution, the government had returned things that were confiscated. This old lady asked for the narrator’s assistance, only to find out that she had given her gold to an impostor and that the receipt she had was a fake. She also believed that the narrator was sent down by Chairman Mao to help figure out her troubles. Except for the fact that Chairman Mao has been dead for almost ten years and it showed how foolish Chinese peasants were. Her story bothered me because she didn’t know of Chairman Mao’s death or that the country didn’t even bother making it public
