For some people reality is never obvious. Throughout the book Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman the marianas trench represents Caden’s sense of reality. When Caden first started walking after school, he had his first encounter with the possibility of being lost in the trench. As Caden finished cleaning the mast he “slip[ed] and slide off the pole” and would have fallen into the marianas trench if it weren’t for Calliope (Shusterman 56).
