Change and Diversity are necessary for a society to thrive. In “The Chrysalids” the lack of change and diversity is a cause of much suffering. In the novel “The Chrysalids” by John Wyndham”, change and diversity are forbidden. This eventually leads to unnecessary suffering and the eventual downfall of Waknuk. This also leads to the massacre at the conclusion of the novel.

The absence of diversity may cause torturing or even death. In “The Chrysalids” The protagonist David Strorm and his fellow mutants felt different due to the lack of diversity in Waknuk.”God created man in his own image. And God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms and two legs: that each arm should be jointed in two places and end in one hand:

In “The Chrysalids”, David Strorm’s Aunt, Aunt Harriet committed suicide when she realized he baby was a mutant. “You have sinned, woman, search your heart, and you will know that you have sinned. Your sin has weakened our defenses, and the enemy has struck through you. You wear the cross on your dress to protect you, but you have not worn it always in your heart. You have not kept constant vigilance for impurity. So there has been a Deviation; and deviation, any deviation from the true image is blasphemy—no less. You have produced defilement!” (Wyndham,72) At this point of the novel, Aunt Harriet realized that her baby was a mutant and requested David’s mother to swap babies. Therefore, Joseph Strorm (David’s dad) boldly rejects her offer and demanded her to vanish from their home. “Aunt Harriet’s body had been found in the river” (Wyndham,74) Eventually Aunt Harriet responded to her sister’s husband’s words by committing suicide. The inadequacy of change and diversity had an effect on her death because if Waknuk was more diverse, she would not feel ashamed to have a baby mutant which will never have led to her asking to swap
