The Progressive Era caused many changes in society. Some people fought for a change, while incidents occurred to change others. During the Progressive Era, Susan B. Anthony fought for the rights of woman. Other incidents, like fires, is why we have the laws we do now. Society was impacted for the better. Woman were not treated equally. Slaves from another country had the right to vote before a female who was born into this country did. The people were more sexist than racist. When the men went off to war and the woman had to take over the factory jobs, the woman even made less than the average male. How unfair is that? The society that lived in this era categorized people by their gender and race. The superior was often the white male. So, Susan B. Anthony decided to do something about it. This incident killed multiple people. The incident took place at the Esch building on the eighth floor. Woman and young females were busy working when the fire occurred. Many people believe the cause of the fire was a cigarette thrown into a trash bin with some extra cloth. As the victims tried to escape the doors happened to be chained up. The workers were trapped in the building. Some victims died quickly because of direct flame or from breathing in the fumes. Others died from jumping out the building to survive. The whole incident was blamed on the company owners for locking the doors and not having any means of survival. These two topics alone have changed the way our society is now. In our era the women have the rights they deserve as United States citizens. We also have sprinklers, fire alarms, extinguishers and safety routes in every building in case of an emergency.
