*In life turning points and overcoming adversity shapes our identities, beliefs, and values. In the short stories, we read in class each character overcame turning points which help shaped their identities. In the short story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Téllez the Barber has to make many decisions that make him question his beliefs and values. Chantal and her mother face many challenges that shape their identity in “The Cake Princess” by Marcee Merell. Joel has many obstacle and turning points that shape his identity in the short story “Doing Time” by Christine Harris. In the beginning, we learn Chantal’s mother has many rules set out to help to help her that ends up pushing her further away from her mother. We learn the many rules she has and they become too much so she tries to break free by baking a cake. Her mother is not a huge fan of cakes so in making the cake it helps shape her identity without anything holding her back, She feels freedom when she bakes. The whole process of making the cake help her; faking the accent, making the video, and eating the cake in front of her mom. Each of these events show us the way she wishes to be. The ending is the major turning point that ultimately bring the two together. The mother confesses her ovarian cancer to her daughter. The cancer makes the mom realize life is too short for rules. Although rules are set out to help you they don’t let you have freedom. He mom learns this the hard way with her cancer, they both learn to accept their flaws and learn from them instead of having millions of rules to prevent them.
