Chapter 2
Company Response

A start-up company establishes its objectives and strategies based on the owner’s goals and aspirations. It is the values promoted by the owners that determine the purpose of a company. Owners define the type of projects that a company should pursue, the maximum duration of a project, the type of clients that the company should work with, and the reasons for pursuing a particular project. The ultimate goal of any company should be to make the maximum profit irrespective of its scale. Accordingly, whether small or large, companies in the construction industry should always regard making a profit as the ultimate goal in this business. The author in this chapter describes the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the construction industry and further discusses possible solutions to overcome these challenges. The mission and vision of a company are defined by the owner's aspirations. Owners determine the values that they desire to instill in the employees and the outcomes that they desire from projects. Hence, it is immensely important for a contractor to carefully manage the portfolio of projects in order to achieve a balanced cash flow for smooth operations.

We at Chas Construction Inc. believe that it is essential for us to envision both – a short-term and a long-term strategic plan. For a start-up venture, it is undeniable that creating a business plan that helps us to achieve both swift and enduring goals will be a good choice. Furthermore, at the start-up stage, constrained by limited resources, it is essential to be profitable in each and every project and maintain a steady cash flow. Simultaneously, under no circumstance should a start-up company select the quantity and scale of projects exceeding its bonding capacity. Being prudent in the selection of the right project makes a start-up viable in the market. In other words, the more a start-up company completes projects which can be built quickly and have a repetitive design, the more chances there are to build a trustworthy reputation in the market.
