As I began reading chapter six, the opening quote by Barth (1976, page 10) stood out to me. The quote speaks about the principal being the leading force in shaping the culture of the school and change factor of the schools culture, whether the change is positive or negative. The chapter discusses two types of leaders who both ultimately affected the culture of their respective schools. The first principal discussed lacked communication skills, he failed to acknowledge parents and guest during their visits to the school. This lack of communication fostered negative relationships with some of the most important people to schools, the parents, thus creating a negative culture. The other type of leader discussed in this chapter is a culture builder, these leaders went above and beyond to create a positive culture conducive to learning and growing for the students, teachers, parents, and community all stakeholders. …show more content…
Byers Elementary and Angela Ellison, Como Elementary, both principals were positive culture builders yet differed in many ways. Pannell built a positive culture within her school with parents and students. She made herself available them at all times. Living within the community prior to her becoming the principal allowed her to know the families and their history within the school and community. She used this knowledge to her advantage when disciplining and rewarding students for behaviors. The culture created within the school was quite different Pannell showed favoritism with staff members, which created tension amongst colleagues. Teachers who were considered favorites received perks with duty assignments, misbehaving students, minimal observations, arrival and departure time, attire exceptions, and other conveniences. As a leader looking to create a positive culture I would treat all staff the same just as I would expect all students to be treated the
