Chapter Summary: All Quiet On The Western Front

By now, Stash has seen plenty of wartime action. He never gets used to seeing his buddies lying dead in the field. No one does, really, but Stash knows he has to do what he has to do and then move on. Way too often he sees one of his buddies who has fought right next to him, dead with a gaping head wound or blown to bits. His first thought is he's glad to be alive, but his second thought is of sadness for the dead. He also knows that at any moment he could be one of those lying dead on the ground. Helen would be devastated if this were to happen. As he and Ted continue to remove bodies from the field, they get closer to the now-abandoned German stronghold, and begin to see more dead Germans than dead Americans. Stash stiffens and tenses his body. He has to be careful and watch for any surprises. Even as a kid at a very young age, he seems to have a sixth sense of being aware of his surroundings. He feels thankful for the skill. It serves him well on the battlefield. Seeing the dead might be bad, but seeing those just barely alive is worse. Stash remembers seeing a GI clinging to life on a battlefield last week. Blood gushed from a wound in the man's chest, but he was still alive. Stash resists the urge to collect a souvenir or two from the Nazis. Stash nearly steps on the dead body of a higher ranking Nazi officer. He's lying face up and his body is riddled with bullet holes from a 50 cal machine gun. Stash is surprised that he's still somewhat intact after being hit by so many bullets. Stash glances him over quickly and can tell this is no ordinary field officer. His uniform markings indicate he is a higher ranking officer than anything Stash has seen before. This is no ordinary grunt German field
