Chapter five looks at the aftermath of the bombings on the people and community. The remnants of the sickness is called “hibakusha” that is experienced by all the characters. Mrs. Nakamura continues to struggle with her illness from the radiation. Battling to fully provide for her family she takes up a job in a chemical plant before the government began to assist her. She retires after thirteen years when her son is able to get a job and her daughter are married. She retires peacefully with government funded housing and looks past the bombing. Dr. Sasaki spent majority of his time helping those around him. He starts working at the Red Cross Hospital where he removes keloid scars from the bombing. After doing that for five years he opens his own practice in Mukaihara. However, during this time is suffering from lung cancer. He goes into surgery to remove the cancer and the operation malfunctions he almost loses his life. He struggles a lot towards the end of his life when his wife passes away from breast cancer. Distancing himself away from the tragedies he continues to help people and becomes more obsessed with work. He opens a bigger clinic and a retirement home to help patients. He immerses himself in Japanese culture and lives his life accordingly. He becomes a naturalized citizen and take the name Father Makoto Takakura. He still suffers from the aftermath of the radiation sickness and soon starts seeing symptoms as his health deteriorates. He moves to a small church in Mukaihara where he meets a woman, Satsue Yoshiki. They spend a good latter part of his life together. He succumbs to sickness and is bedridden for the last ten years of his life. He passes away in November, 1977 and is buried in Novitiate. There are always fresh flowers on his
