During WW2 amid the Holocaust, a Berlin Family; Bruno, a nine-year-old, his parents, 12-year-old sister, and maids relocated to the outskirts of an active Concentration Camp. Bruno’s fathers’ promotion to Commandant, after being visited by Adolf Hitler himself, is the reason for their sudden departure. Moving so suddenly was obviously very upsetting for Bruno, but after exploring the countryside around his new home, he stumbled upon a barbed wire fence. After walking its length, he meets a young Jewish boy named Shmuel. Bruno learned more about Shmuel and his family on the other side of the fence and that Shmuel and Him shared the same birthday. Throughout their many meetings, Shmuel continued to get skinnier despite Bruno sneaking food over the fence every time they meet. After learning Bruno had lice, the Maids cut his hair just like the Jewish men and boys on the other side of the fence. Bruno jokes with Shmuel, saying that they look the same. Shmuel agrees, but is confused by the gesture. Doesn’t Bruno know that Shmuel is in a Death Camp? Apparently not because after learning Bruno’s Mother convinced his Father to move them back to Berlin, Bruno draws up a plan to sneak into the camp with Shmuel’s help after learning Shmuels’ father had gone missing. After getting across the fence and putting on the prisoner clothes Shmuel gave him, Bruno and Shmuel start their search. Before getting far, Shmuel and Bruno are stopped by guards and forced to join a “march”. The “march” is forced into a gas chamber. The others try to plead with the other prisoner’s saying that it’s only a shower and that they’ll be out after. Bruno apologizes to a disheartened Shmuel for not being able to find his father, and tells him that he is his best friend in the entire world.
