The Red Badge of Courage

In the story, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane it tells of a young man’s journey from a farm to a battle field in which he will be put to the ultimate test. It tells of his fight against himself as well as his enemy. It also shows how he over comes his uncertainties in battle as well as perseveres through many a struggle and in doing so he demonstrates thoughtfulness, fear, and courage. He also displays his fear when aimlessly wondering through the woods, he encounters a dead corps sitting alone against a tree, the youth stands their horrified and then starts taking steps backward still looking in to the eyes of the corps for fear that if he turned around it might stealthily pursue him. Henry thirdly demonstrates fear by hiding amongst a wounded parade of men for fear that one of the officer’s might see him wandering around by himself and tell him to region his unit. Secondly the youth displays his courage by willingly charging into battle even after over hearing a couple of officers in charge of their unit say that many of these brave lads will not return from this fight. He furthermore displays his courage when in the heat of a battle he sees his platoons’ flag fall and immediately runs toward it and lays aside his rifle his only protection and picks up the flag in order to keep its colors streaming and to prove to the enemy that they weren’t backing down.
