I do somewhat agree with the statement that “... nothing positive at all about Chris McCandless’s lifestyle or wilderness doctrine,” scolded another correspondent. “Entering the wilderness purposefully ill-prepared, and surviving a near-death experience does not make you a better human, it makes you damn lucky;”. Chris’ adventure was an unneeded attempt to escape from reality and his parents. To escape from reality and the abuse from his parents he did not need to go on such a dangerous and prolonged journey. Chris and his siblings did receive some terrible behavior from his parents and his mother received awful treatment from Chris’ father. I do see something admirable about his cause, to attempt to show his parents that they were in the wrong and need to treat their kids with respect. Chris had all the reason to be upset with his family and the right to do something about it. But his actions were very uncalled for considering the situation with his siblings. He could have expressed his feelings in many different ways. Chris was capable of asking for help or using a different way to escape his parents, but he did not try to ask for help, instead he bottled up his anger for his parents his entire life and eventually released it by running away. This was very immature by Chris. It was inconsiderate of Chris to act out like this. He should have dealt with this in a more mature in caring way. Chris must have hurt his family and significant others in his life. Chris should have dealt with his problem by discussing this with family or used another method to deal with all his pent up anger. Chris could have used sports, or hiking, or something to do with the outdoors. Chris was very enthusiastic about the outdoors, if he got a job as a park ranger or a different outdoor activity he could have been happy. This would allow Chris to forget about his parents and keep from emotionally harming his
