“To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time ~ Elie Wiesel Night” In the novel The Devil’s Arithmetic it talks about a girl named hannah that goes to an alternate universe and becomes a girl named Chaya, she experiences the holocaust to understand the agony and terror it was. A question people are having now about Hannah is has she changed and now appreciates her religion? I believe she hasn’t changed nor appreciates her religion.
Hannah doesn’t want to learn about her religion herself. Though she is singing the songs and having fun as it states “ She found herself singing, the words stumbling out as if her mouth remembered what her mind did not… She began to clap madly in rhythm until the tune came to an abrupt end.” people seem to think this means that she’s learning and is having fun with it. However, earlier in the text she claims to not know the song “ I don’t know the words she called back… her mouth remembered what her mind did not, as if her mouth belonged to Chaya, her head to Hannah.” If she was still Hannah she wouldn’t have any idea even when she gets back home she won’t have any idea how to sing the song and dance to it because it was all Chaya not Hannah.

Yes, she probably does miss being Hannah and thatś why she talks about it a lot ¨ Do you miss them still so much… My mother and Father and the rest of my family.¨ But when itś in every single chapter it gets concerning. If she was actually accepting her religion she would have no problem being Chaya and have no complaints about wanting to go back nor trying to convince people that sheś telling the truth about her life as hannah. ¨I have another life… I have another family…” Her saying things like this proves that she hasn't accepted life as
